What the Eye Icon Means in Teams Chat
When you send a message in Microsoft Teams, a small eye icon appears underneath it once the recipient has opened the chat thread and viewed the message. This is Teams' read receipt — the same idea as the blue double-tick in WhatsApp or "Seen" in iMessage, just rendered as an eye rather than a checkmark.
The icon only shows if read receipts are switched on for both people in the conversation. If either side has turned the feature off, the eye never appears, and neither person can tell whether a message has actually been opened.
Message Status Icons at a Glance
The eye icon is one of a small set of message-level icons Teams shows next to something you've sent. They're easy to conflate with presence icons (the coloured dot on your profile picture), but they track a completely different thing — the state of an individual message, not your overall availability.

These are distinct from Teams' presence icons (green check, yellow clock, red dash, purple arrow) — those describe whether you are Available, Away, Busy, or Offline, not whether a specific message has been read.
How to Turn Read Receipts On or Off
- Click your profile picture in the top-right corner of Teams.
- Select Settings, then open the Privacy tab.
- Toggle Read receipts on or off.
- The change applies immediately across every chat — no need to restart Teams.
The setting is mutual by design: if you turn it off, your own messages stop showing the eye icon to other people, but you also lose visibility into everyone else's read receipts — including in chats where the other person still has the feature on. There's no way to see other people's receipts while hiding your own.
Read Receipts vs. Presence Status
It's easy to assume the eye icon and your green/yellow/red status dot are connected — they aren't. Presence describes whether Teams currently thinks you're Available or Away, based on keyboard/mouse activity, your calendar, and calls. Read receipts describe a single message.
That means the two can point in opposite directions. You can open a chat, get marked Seen, and then immediately go idle and flip to Away — the eye icon stays put even though your dot changes. Conversely, you can be showing Available while a message sits unread for hours, because Available only means Teams detects recent activity, not that you've looked at every chat.

Group Chats, Channels, and Org Policy Limits
20-person cap on group chats
Read receipts work in group chats, but only if the group has 20 members or fewer. Larger groups don't show the eye icon at all — there's no partial "read by 6 of 40" indicator above that threshold.
Not supported in channels
Channel posts never show read receipts, regardless of channel size or your personal setting. The feature is scoped to chats (1:1 and group) only.
"Read by" for group chats
In an eligible group chat, select a message and choose More options → Read by to see exactly which members have viewed it — more detail than the eye icon alone gives you.
Org-level policy can override it
Some organisations disable read receipts tenant-wide through admin policy. If your Privacy toggle is missing or greyed out, that's almost always an IT-managed setting, not a bug on your end.
