Why Teams Notifications Stop Working
Teams notifications fail at one of four layers: your status, Teams' own notification settings, your operating system and the app itself. People usually jump straight to reinstalling, but the cause is almost always in the first two layers, which take under a minute to check.
| Symptom | Most likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| No banners, but messages arrive | Do Not Disturb, Focus, or banners set to Activity feed only | Check status, then Notifications and activity |
| No banners and no sound at all | Teams switched off in Windows or Mac notifications | Allow Teams in system notification settings |
| Alerts work on the PC, not the phone | Phone permission off, or you are active on desktop | Allow Teams in phone settings |
| Alerts go to the phone when you are at the PC | Teams sees you as Away | Keep status Available |
| Red badge number won't clear | Unread item or corrupt cache | Open the chat, restart, clear cache |
How to Fix Teams Notifications, Step by Step
Work through these in order. Test after each one, because most people are fixed by step 1 or 2.
- Check Do Not Disturb and Focus. Look at the status dot next to your profile picture. If it is Do Not Disturb or Focus, Teams is holding banners back on purpose. Set yourself to Available and test again. Also check that Windows Focus or Mac Focus is not on.
- Check Teams' own notification settings. In Teams select Settings and more (the three dots next to your profile picture), then Settings, then Notifications and activity. Set Chat message notifications to Show in banner, @Mentions to Show in Activity and banner, and Likes and reactions to Show in Activity and banner. Make sure the mute-all-notifications toggle in the General section is off.
- Check your operating system settings. On Windows go to Settings, System, Notifications and make sure Microsoft Teams is switched on with banners allowed. On a Mac go to System Settings, Notifications, Microsoft Teams and choose Allow notifications.
- Turn off Focus Assist, Do Not Disturb or Focus modes. A Windows Focus session or a Mac Focus mode can silence Teams even when Teams itself is set up correctly. Switch it off or add Teams to the allowed apps.
- Check your phone. Open your phone's Settings, Notifications, find Teams and allow alerts, banners and sounds. On Android also exclude Teams from battery optimisation. In the Teams mobile app, tap your profile picture, then Notifications, and confirm the toggles are on.
- Update and fully restart Teams. Quit Teams from the system tray or menu bar (closing the window leaves it running), update to the latest version, and open it again.
- Clear the Teams cache. A corrupt cache is a common cause of notifications that stop or never clear. Clearing it signs you out, so have your password and MFA device ready.
- Sign out and back in. Sign out from your profile picture menu, then sign in again so Teams re-registers for notifications.
- Check for a Microsoft outage. If everything above looks right and colleagues report the same thing, the problem may be on Microsoft's side. An admin can check Service health in the Microsoft 365 admin center.
For the cache step, the folder paths differ between new Teams, classic Teams and Mac. The full walkthrough is in how to clear the Teams cache.
Teams Notifications Not Working on Windows or Mac
If Teams settings look right but nothing appears, the block is almost always in the operating system. On Windows, check Settings, System, Notifications for the Microsoft Teams entry, and look at whether a Focus session is running from the notification area. On a Mac, open System Settings, Notifications, Microsoft Teams, and check both the allow toggle and the alert style: "None" shows nothing at all.
Teams Notifications Not Working on Your Phone
Teams on mobile has two separate switches and both must be on: the Notifications screen inside the Teams app (profile picture, then Notifications) and your phone's own settings for Teams (alerts, banners, sounds, badges). When the system switch is off, Teams usually tells you so at the top of its Notifications screen.
There is also a timing rule that surprises people. Teams does not normally buzz your phone while you are active at your computer. It waits until you have been idle for a few minutes, then sends the alert to your phone. If you are at your desk and expect both devices to ping, only the desktop will. Our guide to how Teams status works on mobile covers how the two devices share your presence.
Why Your Teams Status Affects Your Notifications
Your presence status and your notifications are linked. Do Not Disturb and Focus mute banners and sounds on purpose. The mobile app's quiet hours also pause notifications outside the times you set.
Away matters too. Teams marks you Away after about five minutes without activity, and from that moment it treats you as away from your computer. That is why a long call or a stretch of reading can suddenly shift your alerts to your phone.
Teams Notification or Badge Won't Go Away
The opposite problem is a red number on the Teams icon or a notification that never clears. Open the chat, channel or Activity item the badge points to, since Teams only clears an unread count once you have viewed it. Then quit and reopen Teams. If the number is still there with nothing unread, the cached copy of your notification state is stale, and clearing the Teams cache resets it.
A red circle with a number is only an unread count. It is not a presence status, and it is a different symbol from the red triangle, which is a sign-in warning.
